Middletown concerned that Musk could hold up funding to redevelop O&W Station

MIDDLETOWN – Work to shore up the crumbling O & W Railroad Station in Middletown is almost complete with the next step being working on redevelopment design with state historical preservation officials.

Once that has been done, final documents could be ready before the summer, said Mayor Joseph DeStefano.

But, while the multi-million restoration is relying on several funding sources, the mayor has one big concern.

“There is one thing up in the air, the Elon Musk DOGE freeze on federal funding, but we are pursuing the job here as we save the building, and now it’s our responsibility to put the packaging together in order to get it completed in a timely fashion,” he told Mid-Hudson News. “But, we are still very confident that we have the ability to bring the project in, but of course, it is always the red flag which is Elon Musk.”

It will cost millions to restore the building, but once completed, RECAP, the Regional Economic Community Action Program, will occupy the entire building with its full slate of Head Start programs and offices.
