Dropkick Murphys ‘broke up’ with Elon Musk before Ken Casey’s anti-Trump remarks at Boston show

Dropkick Murphys’ leading man Ken Casey says the punk band “broke up” with Elon Musk long before rumors started to swirl that the group’s X account got suspended because the singer called out a concertgoer flaunting a MAGA hat.

The Boston native is also standing firm in his hard stance that Donald Trump is a traitor, labeling the president a “rat” and a “coward.”

Widespread speculation sparked across social media after the weekend when people on X, a Musk-owned platform formerly known as Twitter, noticed a “@dropkickmurphys” account had been suspended.

Several news outlets had also reported about the suspension being connected to Casey’s interaction with a concertgoer waving around a Make America Great Again hat during a Sunday night show at MGM Music Hall at Fenway.

Casey clarified in a statement Tuesday that the account is not his band’s, and that his iconic Celtic punk group has been off X since Musk took it over in 2022.

“We broke up with him first,” Casey said of Musk. “We quit Twitter in 2022 when he was only half a Nazi.”

“Then someone else took our handle, pretending to be our official account,” he added, “so we filed a legal complaint to put a stop to that — which is why @dropkickmurphys shows as suspended. Look, we pulled our account because we didn’t want to be part of that guy’s empire. But if we were still on there, I’m sure he would have suspended us by now.”

Clips of Casey calling out the attendee with the MAGA hat at the show have gone viral.

Casey began the interaction by describing different styles of MAGA hats as a “Chinese (expletive) red” one, the “black on black Elon Musk true Nazi edition,” and “then my man here, he’s getting ready for summer with a nice (expletive) light white one.”

“Listen, I admire your dedication,” Casey told the concertgoer, “but I will ask everyone: If you’re in a room full of people, and you want to know who is in a cult, how do you know who is in a cult? They’ve been holding up a (expletive) hat the whole night to represent a president. This is America, there’s no kings here.”

“Anyway, do you mind, sir? We’re going to play a song about our grandparents and people who fought Nazis in the war and (expletive),” Casey added. “So, if you can shut the (expletive) up for five minutes.”

The Massachusetts GOP says Casey’s interaction with the concertgoer is “yet another example of an out-of-touch celebrity who lives a charmed life, completely insulated from the consequences of the policies they champion.”

“When you’re that rich and famous, politics doesn’t affect you the way it does everyday Americans,” GOP spokesperson Logan Trupiano said in a statement Tuesday. “Surrounded by yes-men, these celebrities feel entitled to insult and demean millions of hardworking people simply for holding different political views.”

This is the latest interaction in which Casey has called out a concertgoer sporting Trump gear at one of the band’s gigs.

Just weeks after Trump regained office in January, Casey made a “friendly” $100 bet with a man wearing a Trump shirt and hat on knowing where the MAGA merchandise was manufactured, according to reports.

Casey revealed the shirt was made in Nicaragua. “He’s taking the shirt off. We’re taking crime off the streets,” the musician joked during a February show in Clearwater, Fla.

Casey doubled down on his dislike for the Trump administration during an interview with MeidasTouch on Monday, saying the president is the “exact opposite of everything we sing about.”

“He’s turned on his friends,” Casey said of Trump. “He’s turned on America’s friends and our allies. He’s a rat and a coward when you think of it that way.”
