1. Brief introduction of Chinese: 15 min
Speaking: With different vernaculars from different regions, most Chinese people nowadays uses Mandarin to communicate with each other.
Reading & Writing: After the Cultural Revolution, most people from mainland China uses the simplified Chinese while people from Taiwan uses the traditional Chinese, of course, there's also ancient Chinese (古文) which people from centuries ago used--still very prominent today in terms of poetry and prose and historical studies etc.
This course: Focus on oral communications. Allow students to introduce themselves while sharing their reason(s) for learning Chinese.
2. Basic pronunciation: PinYin: 60 min
Tones: practice with all 4 of them
Alphabet: similar to the English and French one, just different pronunciations
3. Greetings: 50 min – While teaching, write down the tones, Chinese characters, and English definition of each word
你好,我的名字是/我叫 (add in the difference between 名 & 字 in Chinese culture, encourage students to translate their names to Chinese or make one up for themselves)
你好吗 (the use of 吗 /呢 in phrases)
我很好,谢谢,你呢
你吃饭了吗 (with acquaintances, Chinese people often greet each other with this rather than the more formal version above)
吃了吃了,你呢 (quickly move on to another subject after this)
Why=为什么=pourquoi, 为=for,什么=what
