UK Intelligence Dossier Claimed COVID-19 Was Engineered in Wuhan Lab, Report Reveals

MI6 warned British government in March 2020 of lab origin; top scientific advisers accused of suppressing evidence to avoid conflict with China and U.S. officials.

A classified report delivered to the British government in March 2020 concluded that COVID-19 had been engineered at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but was reportedly dismissed by the medical establishment to avoid straining relations with China and risking research funding. The report, submitted by former MI6 chief Sir Richard Dearlove, asserted it was “beyond reasonable doubt” that the virus did not emerge naturally, challenging Beijing’s claim that the outbreak began in a wet market.

Intelligence experts and academics compiled the dossier, which accused Chinese officials of altering virus samples to support a natural origin narrative. Despite Dearlove’s claims, the report was allegedly sidelined by government science adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, who critics say suppressed the lab leak theory to avoid “offending” Beijing or disrupting scientific funding streams. Vallance, who appeared frequently with then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson during public pandemic briefings, is now facing calls for transparency about his actions.

Former minister Steve Baker said Vallance should “be fully transparent about what he knew and why he chose to be among those who avoided inconvenient questions.” Speaking on the government’s handling of the report, Dearlove stated, “Boris [Johnson] himself was persuaded by its argument. But the weight of the Government’s scientific establishment, already signed up to the Chinese narrative, prevailed.”

A source close to Johnson claimed UK officials resisted endorsing the lab origin theory to avoid upsetting Dr. Anthony Fauci, then-head of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which had provided funding to the Wuhan lab, including for gain-of-function coronavirus research. “The truth is that the Covid-19 virus was not just Chinese but also partly American. It was a Chimerican chimera. So Vallance and the others clung to the wet market/bat/pangolin theory long after it had begun to look ridiculous,” the source stated.

German intelligence reached a similar conclusion. Earlier this month, German media reported that the BND foreign intelligence service determined with 80–95% certainty in 2020 that the virus had escaped from the Wuhan lab, supporting Dearlove’s assertions.

Despite these findings, the lab leak theory was widely dismissed and labeled a conspiracy. It was also reportedly used as a pretext by the Biden administration to urge social media platforms to censor so-called COVID “disinformation.”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly blamed China for the pandemic, calling in 2023 for Beijing to pay reparations to the global community. “Their lies and deception killed any opportunity to stop this deadly global catastrophe at the start,” Trump stated. “Add to that the probability that the virus emerged from a Chinese government lab, and may even have been engineered by Chinese government scientists, and it is clear that the nations of the world are not just owed a massive apology; they are owed massive damages.”

“To collect this compensation, nothing should be off the table—tariffs, taxes, and a global summit on reparations,” Trump added.
