Opioid fatalities and suicides down in Ulster County

Opioid fatalities and suicides down in Ulster County

KINGSTON – The number of opioid fatalities in Ulster County declined in 2024 compared to the previous year by 45 percent.

Deputy County Mental Health Commissioner Katrina Williams said there has been a concentration of effort in one specific area of the county.

“The decrease is mostly in the City of Kingston where a lot of the outreach efforts tend to be in the Kingston area so we are really trying to focus on other areas of the county to make sure we are being as responsive so we can see the same kind of impact,” she said.

Williams also said the number of suicides in the county in 2024 was down by 17 percent with 25 people taking their lives.

Both declines are attributed to prevention programs from the county mental health department and other outreach programs.
