Son Surprises Dad with Dream Car He Sold 40 Years Ago for ‘Diaper Money,’ Bringing Him to Tears

A father’s sacrifice made over four decades ago to support his family turned into an unforgettable surprise when his son gifted him a restored version of his dream car. Jared Guynes, 40, presented his father, Earl Guynes, with a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro—a car Earl had reluctantly sold to provide for his growing family. The heartwarming moment, which brought tears to Earl’s eyes, is a testament to love, gratitude, and the enduring power of memories.

A Camaro to Remember

In the early 1980s, Earl Guynes, now 65 and living in Mesquite, Texas, proudly owned a Marina Blue 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. Complete with white stripes, a cowl hood, V8 engine, automatic transmission, and Cragar 15” wheels, the Camaro was the pride of Earl’s younger years. “The car was loud and people would always be looking at you,” Earl reminisced in an interview with NBC Boston. “It was just a cool thing, a fun thing to do.”

But life had other plans. Earl married Mona in 1982, and soon after, the responsibilities of fatherhood took priority. By 1983, with baby Jared on the way, Earl made the difficult decision to sell his beloved Camaro for cash to afford “diaper money.” As Jared grew up, the story of the Camaro became a family legend, often recounted with humor and fondness.

A Son’s Dream

For Jared, the story of the Camaro left a lasting impression. "When he described that he once had so many cool cars in the late '70s and '80s after he got out of high school and before he got with my mom, I couldn't believe it," Jared told Good Morning America. “And so the coolest car that he had was this 1967 Camaro.”

Jared, now a self-employed advertising consultant living in Rockwall, Texas, dreamed for years of giving his dad back his dream car. In 2021, after a successful year in business, he decided to turn his long-held aspiration into reality. “Instead of doing something responsible, like paying down debt or investing, I started looking for my dad’s car,” he shared.

In 2022, Jared located a near-exact duplicate of Earl’s original Camaro just 70 miles north of his home in Sherman, Texas. Though the car was similar, it was a significant upgrade from the one Earl owned decades ago. Unlike the original, which had a roll cage and dangerously loud exhaust, this version was fully restored, safer, quieter, and even street legal.

A Labor of Love

The restoration process was no small feat. Over the course of two years, from September 2022 to October 2024, Jared poured time, effort, and resources into making the car perfect. Keeping the project a secret, he ensured that every detail matched his dad’s original Camaro, down to the color, wheels, and stripes.

“When I needed help, I’d have to tell people not to take pictures or park it outside,” Jared shared. “It was challenging because, honestly, my dad is the expert on this car.”

Finally, the car was ready for its grand reveal. Jared planned an elaborate surprise for Earl’s 65th birthday, enlisting the help of magician Diamond Jim Tyler to create a magical moment. During a family dinner, the magician performed a trick that led Earl to pick the numbers ‘6’ and ‘7’ and spell out ‘Camaro.’

An Emotional Reunion

The climax of the evening came when the magician led Earl and the family to the parking lot. There, under the spotlight, was the restored Camaro. At first, Earl thought it was merely a car resembling his old one. When Jared handed him the keys and said, “Thanks for the diaper money, Dad,” the realization set in.

“He wrapped his arms around me, and he couldn’t believe it,” Jared recalled to Good Morning America. “He cried and told me he loved me. It was one of the best days of my life.”

Earl described the experience as “the greatest magic trick I ever saw in my life,” he told Good Morning America. “I had no idea what was coming. It was the greatest surprise I’ve ever seen.”

A Symbol of Love

For Jared, the Camaro was more than just a car. “I wanted to find the most meaningful way to show him how much I love him and how great of a dad he’s been,” Jared told NBC Boston. “I want him to get in that car and be reminded every time he starts it up that his sacrifice was not in vain.”

As for Earl, he remains steadfast in his decision to have sold the original car. “If I could go back, I’d sell the car again,” Earl said. “Providing for my family was always the right choice.”

A Full-Circle Moment

Now, the restored Camaro sits in Earl’s garage, a symbol of sacrifice and gratitude. Earl, who works at O’Reilly Auto Parts, takes pride in driving the car and making new memories with Jared. “This time, it’s even better than I remember,” Earl said. “It’s a little safer, quieter, and more polished, but it still draws attention everywhere we go.”

Jared’s gesture not only returned a piece of his father’s youth but also deepened the bond between them. “It was always the Camaro,” Jared said. “And it always will be.”
