Andrew Benintendi capped a three-run eighth inning with a go-ahead RBI single as the Chicago White Sox edged the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 on Tuesday night, snapping a five-game losing streak.
Chicago (37-120) remained tied with the 1962 New York Mets for the most losses in a single season in modern major league history but secured its first win this year when trailing after seven innings.
The White Sox struggled against Angels rookie right-hander Jack Kochanowicz, who threw seven strong innings, allowing only three singles and no runs while striking out four and not issuing a walk. He threw 58 of his 82 pitches for strikes.
In the eighth, consecutive doubles from Zach DeLoach and Bryan Ramos against Hunter Strickland (3-2) brought Chicago within 2-1. A walk set up the tying run, and an error by Angels second baseman Jack Lopez on a popup from Luis Robert Jr. allowed Robert to earn an RBI single.
Benintendi followed with his run-scoring single off Brock Burke, putting the White Sox ahead 3-2.
Justin Anderson worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to secure his first save of the year, while Prelander Berroa (1-0) earned the win.
For the Angels (63-94), Eric Wagaman had two hits and an RBI, capitalizing against the White Sox bullpen after rookie starter Jonathan Cannon delivered six scoreless innings, scattering three hits with one walk and a career-high-tying seven strikeouts.
The highlight of the game for the home crowd came when Mickey Moniak hit a seemingly innocuous popup that fell between four players for a single in the fifth inning, prompting fans to chant “Sell the team!” directed at owner Jerry Reinsdorf.
Cannon threw 78 pitches before giving way to Gus Varland, who struggled with command. Varland walked Kevin Pillar to start the seventh, and Wagaman later lined a 3-1 pitch to right for a two-out RBI double, scoring the game’s first run.
Lopez greeted Berroa with his first career home run in the eighth, extending the Angels’ lead to 2-0.
The game experienced a rain delay of 1 hour and 5 minutes before starting.
