Charlotte Worthington, the Olympic gold medal-winning BMX rider from Manchester, is making a significant life change by relocating to the United States. The 28-year-old, who achieved a remarkable victory at the Tokyo 2021 Games, described her decision as a way to “live out the dream” after facing a challenging period of mental health struggles.
Having moved from Manchester to Northamptonshire, where her family has deep roots, Worthington reflected on the support that helped her through difficult times. She cited the stress of competition, especially after gaining recognition as one of the world’s top riders, as a major contributor to her mental health challenges. “It was petrifying,” she told the BBC, recalling how the pressure transformed her love for the sport into a source of anxiety.
Despite these struggles, Worthington reassured fans that she will continue to compete for Team GB. “I love England, and it has done so much for me,” she stated. Her new home in Pennsylvania is seen as a strategic move, as it is known as the birthplace of BMX and action sports. “We love the lifestyle,” she added, expressing excitement about the opportunities that await her.
While she has fond memories of training at the renowned Adrenaline Alley in Corby, Worthington is ready to embrace the vibrant BMX culture in America. She emphasized the importance of family and community support in overcoming her mental health hurdles, which ultimately led her to approach the Paris Games with a renewed perspective.
As she prepares for this next chapter, Worthington remains committed to her passion for BMX, promising to represent Team GB in future competitions while pursuing new adventures across the Atlantic.
