Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign attributes the recent negative jobs report to former President Donald Trump’s economic decisions, nearly a full term after he left office.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is pointing fingers at former President Donald Trump for the latest disappointing jobs report, asserting that his administration’s policies have continued to impact the economy adversely. This accusation comes almost a full term after Trump left office.
“Donald Trump failed Americans as president, costing our economy millions of jobs and bringing us to the brink of recession,” stated James Singer, spokesperson for the Harris campaign, in a press release. He criticized Trump’s proposed Project 2025 agenda, claiming it would further harm the middle class, increase taxes on working families, and dismantle essential social services.
“Now, he’s promising even more damage with a Project 2025 agenda that will decimate the middle class and increase taxes on working families, while ripping away health care, raising prescription drug costs, and cutting Social Security and Medicare — all while making his billionaire donors richer,” Singer added.
Singer emphasized the progress made under the Biden-Harris administration but acknowledged that more efforts are needed to reduce costs for families. “We’ve made significant progress, but Vice President Harris knows there’s more work to do to lower costs for families,” he said. Harris’ campaign outlined her commitment to strengthening the middle class by addressing corporate price gouging, eliminating hidden fees, and capping rent and drug costs.
The statement from Harris’ campaign comes in response to the latest U.S. jobs report, which showed a sharp slowdown in job growth in July. According to the Labor Department, employers added 114,000 jobs in July, falling short of the 175,000 jobs anticipated by LSEG economists. Additionally, the unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, the highest since October 2021, contrary to expectations that it would remain at 4.1%.
The Trump campaign, on the other hand, placed the blame squarely on the Biden-Harris administration. “Kamala Harris has proudly and repeatedly celebrated her role as Joe Biden’s co-pilot on ‘Bidenomics,’” said Karoline Leavitt, Trump Campaign National Press Secretary. “She cast tie-breaking votes in the Senate for spending that put inflation on steroids, and despite the evidence that America’s working families are hurting she tells us these failed plans are working.”
Leavitt further criticized Harris, stating, “The basic necessities of food, gas, and housing are less affordable, unemployment is rising, and Kamala doesn’t seem to care.”
As the economic debate heats up, both campaigns are leveraging the jobs report to advance their narratives. The Harris campaign continues to focus on middle-class growth and cost reduction, while the Trump campaign underscores the challenges faced by working families and attributes these issues to current economic policies. The differing perspectives on economic accountability are expected to play a significant role as the 2024 election approaches.
