Failed Trump Assassin Purchased Ladder and Ammo on Morning of Rally, New Report Reveals

Thomas Matthew Crooks, the failed assassin who attempted to shoot former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, reportedly purchased a ladder and 50 rounds of ammunition on the morning of the event, according to CNN. Law enforcement officials detailed Crooks’ movements leading up to the attack, providing a clearer picture of his preparation and intent.

On the day of the rally, Crooks bought the ladder from Home Depot and ammunition from a local gun store. He then drove his Hyundai Sonata, which contained an improvised explosive device (IED) wired to a transmitter, about an hour north to the rally site. Once there, Crooks reportedly used the ladder to scale a nearby building and open fire on Trump, narrowly missing the former president.

“It’s not clear whether Crooks used the ammunition or the ladder that he bought on Saturday during his attack later that day,” CNN reported. However, a ladder was found propped against the building from which Crooks fired.

In addition to the firearm, Crooks had a detonator and explosives in his vehicle’s trunk. Despite the meticulous preparation, authorities have not yet identified a clear motive for the shooting. His online history shows no political or ideological impetus, suggesting interests primarily in coding and gaming. There is also no evidence that he searched online for instructions on creating an explosive device.

The gun used in the attack was legally purchased and owned by Crooks’ father. His parents, who have been cooperating with law enforcement, stated that Crooks did not seem to have friends or political leanings. They admitted to knowing little about his recent activities.

The incident has sparked discussions about security measures at political events and the challenges of identifying lone actors with no apparent ideological affiliations.
