Emilio Vincent Santana, a 14-year-old student at Saint Raphael Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, made an inspiring decision that had been years in the making. After growing his hair for six years, Emilio cut it all off for a cause close to his heart—donating 24 inches of his hair to children undergoing medical treatments that result in hair loss. This selfless act not only changed his appearance but also left a lasting impact on the lives of those who need it most.
The Beginning of a Journey
For Emilio, the idea of growing out his hair came at a young age. He was in third grade when he witnessed something that would shape the next six years of his life. While at the beach, Emilio noticed a young girl who removed her hat before entering the water. To his surprise, her hair came off with it, and the sadness on her face left an impression on him that he couldn’t shake.

“I could see she looked sad or had this shyness or embarrassment that crossed her face, and that moment just stuck with me,” Emilio shared in an interview with The Bright Story. “It made me think about how much confidence something like hair can give a person, and it made me want to help.” From that day forward, Emilio decided to grow his hair to donate it to a child who might feel the same way that girl did.
A Mother’s Perspective
Emilio’s mother, Flor Reyna, recalls the first time he brought up the idea of growing his hair for donation. “He was very young when he first expressed a genuine curiosity about donating his hair,” she shared. “At the time, I initially thought it was just a temporary idea or a passing phase. But as the years went by, he consistently mentioned it, always so excited about how long his hair would eventually grow. His persistence and enthusiasm really showed how much it meant to him.”

Flor, originally from Rhode Island, supported her son’s decision from the beginning. Along with Emilio’s father, Louis Santana, a firefighter, the family made sure that Emilio’s hair was always well cared for. “We supported him by purchasing hair products and styling his hair the way he liked, to help keep it healthy and looking its best,” she explained. “During the early stages, as his hair grew longer, he faced some challenges, including teasing and unkind remarks. During those tough times, we always reminded him to stay true to his goals and encouraged him to hold his head high.”
Growing for a Purpose
Starting in third grade, Emilio committed to growing his hair long enough to make a significant donation. By the time he was 14, his hair had grown to a remarkable length—24 inches—long enough for a substantial donation to Hair We Share, a nonprofit organization that provides wigs to children and adults experiencing medical hair loss, free of charge.

Despite the challenges he faced, from maintaining long hair to enduring judgment from his peers, Emilio’s commitment never wavered. “I was mocked and told that boys shouldn’t have long hair. Numerous times I was mistaken for a girl, which added to the difficulties I faced,” Emilio explained. “But I kept in mind that my efforts would ultimately bring joy to someone else. The thought of being able to make a difference by donating my hair motivated me to stay committed and see it through.”

Flor recalled how the family supported Emilio through those difficult moments. “Over time, the hurtful comments and remarks no longer affected him. His determination to reach his goal made him stronger,” she said.
A Big Cut for a Big Cause
In August 2024, after six years of dedication, Emilio finally cut his hair. “It was an emotional experience for me,” Emilio shared. “I felt a sense of sadness knowing how long I had grown it. I had so many memories with that hair, but I also recognized that I was doing it for a meaningful purpose.”

For Emilio’s mother, the moment was bittersweet. “That day was bittersweet yet filled with pride and deep emotion,” Flor said. “Witnessing him remain committed to his goal through the years, persevering through both good times and bad, was incredibly touching and truly admirable. His long, beautiful hair was not just a personal achievement; it was about to serve a meaningful purpose that he had worked so hard to achieve.”

Emilio’s hair was sent to Hair We Share, where it will be used to make a wig for a child who has lost their hair due to medical treatments such as chemotherapy. Emilio chose Hair We Share because their mission resonated with him. “They are dedicated to helping individuals experiencing medical hair loss by providing wigs at no cost, which was really important to me. Their commitment to bringing smiles to people’s faces truly resonated with me,” he explained in the interview.
Going Beyond the Hair
Emilio didn’t stop at just donating his hair. He also took the initiative to raise funds for the organization to help cover the costs of making the wigs. “In order to make a wig, it costs around $900 to $1,350,” Emilio said. “Right now, I’m at the $700 mark, almost there.” His fundraising efforts were driven by a desire to ensure that the organization wouldn’t have to struggle to provide the wig. “I want to make sure that I put my all into this because it’s my hair,” he said.
His dedication to the cause has inspired many in his community, including his wrestling coach, David Gonzalez. “The moment he says he wants to do something, no matter how tough it is, no matter how many odds are stacked against him, he’s going to make sure he takes the steps required,” Coach Gonzalez shared with NBC 10 News.
Flor added that Emilio’s generosity and determination are just a part of who he is. “My son Emilio has always possessed a genuinely kind and pure heart,” she shared. “His caring nature and loving spirit shine through in everything he does, and he consistently seeks to help those in need. His generosity is remarkable, and his wisdom is well beyond his years. His father and I are immensely proud of him—words can’t even begin to capture the depth of my feelings as his mom.”
Looking to the Future
Now sporting a fresh buzz cut, Emilio feels a mix of emotions but is ultimately proud of what he has accomplished. “Everybody says I look good still—still cute,” he laughed. “It’s taken me a little bit of time to get used to it, but I’m happy that I made the cut.” Though his hair is gone, Emilio knows that it will bring joy to someone who needs it.

To the person who receives his hair, Emilio has a heartfelt message: “You are beautiful no matter what—whether you have hair or not. I hope you know my hair was made for you, and I hope that my hair brings you genuine happiness and puts a smile on your face.”
For Emilio, the journey of growing and cutting his hair was about more than just a haircut. It was about making a difference, spreading kindness, and showing that even small acts of generosity can have a big impact. His story is a reminder that selflessness and compassion are powerful forces for good in the world.
