WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — President Joe Biden has  launched a task force to address a "systemic" problem of mishandling classified information during presidential transitions.

The announcement comes days after a U.S. Department of Justice special counsel’s critical report of Biden’s handling of such documents.

Presidential Records Transition Task Force will study previous transitions to determine best practices for safeguarding classified information from an outgoing administration.

It will assess the need for change to current procedure, to prevent removal of sensitive information that should be kept with National Archives and Records Administration.

The panel will include representatives from the White House, General Services Administration, NARA, National Security Council and Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The task force will operate independently from White House Transition Coordinating Council.

Presidential transitions can be chaotic as records of an outgoing administration are transferred to National Archives and political appointees leave their jobs. Officials from multiple administrations have said it is a challenge with transfer of classified information.
