Airplanes are a modern miracle, with their ability to hang mid-air and transport people across the globe in a matter of hours. However, when something goes wrong, the results are catastrophic! That’s why aviation disaster stories are popular subject matter for films. The aviation disaster genre of fiction can be traced to Nevil Shute’s 1948 novel “No Highway,” which was adapted into the 1951 film “No Highway in the Sky.” Though filmed in England, it was a Hollywood production starring American movie stars James Stewart as a “boffin” scientist and Marlene Dietrich as a glamorous actress he befriends amid a catastrophe. British actress Glynis Johns plays the kindhearted stewardess who falls in love with the scientist. This unique film blends science, drama, and intense excitement in a stirring romantic drama which remains highly entertaining today.
