Scientists in the United States and USSR conducted multiple experiments and case studies proving that living matter could be transformed into a thing called “ectoplasm,” which could then be converted into some kind of force that would transcend space itself. But ectoplasm was just the tip of an iceberg, beyond anything you saw in Ghostbusters—because it was part of a bigger, horrifying story of a real-life Dr. Frankenstein, an American aviation hero, the search for immortality, organ transplantation, eugenics, and the spiritualist movement.
Spiritualism in the late 1800s and early 1900s involved having paranormal parties to conduct seances and communicate with spirits. Photographs circulated of psychic mediums with alleged ectoplasm around them. But where fraudsters were being exposed publicly, there were real science experiments on ectoplasm and immortality being conducted privately. Not all of these experiments were ethical, either.
