An ambitious new project based in Seattle could be a game changer in detecting disease. The Seattle Hub for Synthetic Biology aims to revolutionize what your doctor can learn about your health, down to your cells.

Allen Institute President and CEO Rui Costa recently walked the halls with KOMO News, pointing out the various labs, with big windows and open space.

"[Paul Allen] bet on something long-term," Costa said. "A big question. No one thought it would be possible to map the brain back then. Some people thought some of this would take a hundred years."

Turns out, it took less than 20. Scientists here not only mapped the human brain, they share their data, tools, and processes—for free.
