Hygiene at Versailles - How Filthy Was Louis XIV's Seat Of Power Really ?

Dec 9, 2023
Hygiene at Versailles - How Filthy Was Louis XIV's Seat Of Power Really ?: The Palace of Versailles is said to have had its own perfume in the time of the Sun King. In the late seventeenth century, a waft of urine, perfume and sweat, occasionally mixed with a little poo, met visitors upon their arrival at Versailles. Those who couldn't remember where they were only had to take a deep breath to ensure they were still at Louis the fourteenth’s seat of power.
