南疆之旅第3天，天朗氣清，早上從庫車市出發經吐禾高速再右轉入被譽為中國地貌景色最美的獨庫公路(下註)抵達天山神秘大峽谷。沿途只見高聳巍峨的雅丹及丹霞地貌連綿不斷，美景令人目不暇給。接近大峽谷入口河谷時，景色越見雄奇壯偉，一排排赤紅色石山聳立河畔，不時夾雜着七彩丹霞山峰，在陽光照射下，金光閃爍。步入峽谷，只見路勢平緩，沿途山崖高聳，奇形怪狀，地層扭曲摺疊痕跡清晰可見，可說是地質奇觀。中午離開峽谷時，陽光反映右方的崖壁上金光閃亮，有如黃金照壁，令人嘆為觀止。

天山神秘大峽谷位於新疆庫車市（古稱龜茲）城北64公里，天山南麓羣山環抱中的天山之中。自1999年發現後，採取邊開發，邊接待遊客同步走的方針，參觀人數與日俱增。

大峽谷區域平均海拔1,600米，最高山峯2,048米。組成峽谷的奇峯羣山由赭色的泥質沙岩構成，當地維吾爾語叫做“克孜利亞”，即紅色的山崖。

神秘大峽谷正處在當今中國九大影視基地之一的克孜利亞勝景中。龐大的紅色山體羣形成於距今1.4億年前的中生代的白堊紀，經億萬年的風剝雨蝕，洪流沖刷，形成縱橫交錯，層疊有序的壠脊與溝槽，遠看如詩如畫，狀若“布達拉宮”，仙天瓊閣；近瞧若人似物，如夢似幻，惟妙惟肖，神韻萬端。令人有鬼斧神工，奇景天成之慨嘆。尤以谷口處的三座山體（奶頭山、麗人山、佛面山）最為壯觀。特別在夕陽斜射，朝霞映山，極目遠眺，色豔紅天。大有不是火焰山，勝似火焰山之奇感。

1999年，一名當地牧羊人在距谷口1,400米深處，高約35米的崖壁上，發現一個始建於盛唐時期的石窟，內有残存佛像壁畫，就文字記載和繪畫藝術而言，在古西域地區至今已發現的300多座佛教石窟中絕無僅有，實屬罕見。
