No other city has fascinated me as much as New York. I've been there many times and countless photos fill my archive. Each time, the Big Apple has captivated me anew - a city that truly never sleeps.
Black and white photography particularly appeals to me. I've been taking photos since I was 15 years old - back then with an old analog Canon AE-1. When I got my first black and white film back from the developer, I was hooked. I've loved this type of photography ever since - maybe that's because of my surname. :-)
For me, the deliberate omission of colors means a reduction to the essentials: to the motif, to forms, to the facial expressions and gestures of the people. Nothing gets lost in the confusion of colors - that's exactly what makes this type of photography so appealing to me. I've been taking analog photos again for three years now. I bought a second-hand Canon AE-1 and enjoy every single shot. I hope that we never completely lose analog photography and black and white photography - I would definitely miss them.
The 100 black and white shots in this post show my New York, my Manhattan - the way I perceived it: off the beaten tourist track, far away from glossy New York. I met normal people, captured moments and moods. In the years before 2015, the atmosphere was even more cheerful, carefree and fearless. I hope that people will come together again and that a new atmosphere of humanity will spread.
I can still remember almost every photo and the mood associated with it. Photos are archived moments - some remain unforgettable.
