Xander Schauffele extends his lead at the Wells Fargo, with Rory McIlroy tied for second place

Xander Schauffele widened his lead to four strokes after the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship, carding a 4-under 67 on Friday in Charlotte, N.C.

Starting the day with a three-shot advantage, the World No. 4 produced a solid round with five birdies, reaching a total of 11-under 131 at the Quail Hollow Club. He wrapped up his round with a lone bogey on the 18th hole after narrowly missing a par save from 14 feet.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland (68) and Jason Day of Australia (67) are the closest contenders, tied at 7-under.

McIlroy rebounded from four bogeys on Thursday with a steady performance on Friday, notching three birdies and 15 pars.

Taylor Moore maintained his momentum with a second consecutive round of 68, bringing him to 6-under and tying with Collin Morikawa and Sungjae Im of South Korea, who were still on the course late Friday afternoon.

The Wells Fargo Championship, the sixth signature event of the season, boasts a $20 million purse and serves as the final preparation for PGA Tour players before next week’s PGA Championship. Notably, there is no 36-hole cut in this tournament.
