The attempted assassination of Donald Trump has ignited a surge of online merchandise, with T-shirts bearing slogans like “Bulletproof,” “Legends Never Die,” “Grazed but not Dazed,” and “Shooting Makes Me Stronger” becoming viral sensations. The shirts, featuring an image of Trump with a clenched fist and a blood-streaked face, range in price from $9 to $40.
In the hours following the shooting, businesses and independent sellers raced to produce and market slogans and merchandise depicting the defiant Republican presidential candidate. This latest wave of Trump-themed products has rapidly gained popularity.
“(The sales) exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect that Trump would have so many fans,” said Zhong Jiachi, 28, owner of Paxinico, a clothing merchant on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. Zhong reported selling around 40 T-shirts with the image of Trump just after he was shot, within 24 hours.
Li Jinwei, 25, who sells goods on Alibaba’s Taobao platform, told Hong Kong media that it took roughly half a minute to produce a Trump T-shirt at her factory in China. “We put the T-shirts on Taobao as soon as we saw the news about the shooting, though we hadn’t even printed them, and within three hours we saw more than 2,000 orders from both China and the United States,” she said.
The image of Trump glaring into a camera, reminiscent of his pose from “The Apprentice,” has become a trademark in much of the merchandise featuring him. In 2023, a mugshot of Trump was quickly turned into T-shirts, shot glasses, mugs, posters, and even bobblehead dolls by supporters and critics alike.
On Saturday, supporters and campaigners embraced the image of Trump taken just after a 20-year-old man shot at him from a rooftop. The incident occurred during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania—a key state in the November 5 election—where Trump was hit in the right ear, leaving him bloodied.
The rapid production and widespread sale of these T-shirts underscore the fervent support Trump continues to enjoy among his base, even in the face of violence. As the U.S. presidential election approaches, this incident and the ensuing merchandise frenzy highlight the intense and polarized nature of the current political climate.
