Tornadoes Could Hit Oklahoma, as Texas Bakes in Record Heat

OKLAHOMA CITY (NEWSnet/AP) — Forecasters say there is another day of risk for tornadoes in the Midwest.

National Weather Service in Oklahoma isn’t certain storms will form, but any that do could bring large hail, dangerous wind and tornadoes.

In south Texas, the heat index is expected to approach 120 degrees during the weekend.

The region is on the north end of a heat dome that stretches from Mexico to South America, National Weather Service meteorologist Zack Taylor said.

On Sunday, it could be a record-setting day for late-May temperature in Austin, Brownsville, Dallas and San Antonio, Taylor said.

"Red flag" fire warnings were issued in west Texas, New Mexico and parts of Arizona, Colorado and Oklahoma.

So far in 2024, 160 tornado watches have been issued in the U.S., as of May 23, according to NWS Storm Prediction Center.
