WASHINGTON – Special Counsel David Weiss is employing a grand jury in Los Angeles to gather documents and potentially witness testimonies in the ongoing federal investigation of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, according to a CNN report citing sources familiar with the matter.
Weiss’s office has not yet responded to Reuters for comments on this development.
The investigation has placed Hunter Biden at the epicenter of considerable criticism from former President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers. These critics have focused on his foreign business dealings as a crucial element in the impeachment inquiry launched against Joe Biden by Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives. The White House has dismissed the impeachment probe as politically motivated, lacking substantial evidence of any misconduct by the president.
In a notable legal development, 53-year-old Hunter Biden entered a plea of not guilty in October to charges alleging he lied about his drug use while purchasing a handgun. This case marks the first criminal prosecution against a child of a sitting U.S. president.
The charges against Hunter Biden were brought forward by Weiss after a proposed plea agreement fell apart during judicial review.
Recently, Hunter Biden has requested a federal court to allow him to subpoena documents from former President Donald Trump and top officials from the Trump-era Justice Department. This move is part of his defense strategy against the federal gun charges he currently faces.
