Solar Flare Event Coincides with Nationwide Cellular Outages, Expert Skeptical of Link

A significant solar flare event might have led to widespread cellular service disruptions, though an expert doubts the connection due to the timing and nature of solar flares.

By yourNEWS Media Staff

A strong solar flare event that occurred just after midnight on Thursday could be the cause of cellular service outages across the United States, as reported by an Oklahoma news station. A meteorologist from KFOR.com highlighted the timing of these technological disruptions, noting the unique challenge posed by our increased reliance on technology during a period of solar maximum. This phase is characterized by heightened solar activity, including more frequent solar storms and flares, marking a significant moment in human history given our dependency on technological systems.

However, Dr. Ryan French, a British Solar Astrophysicist at the National Solar Observatory, offered a differing perspective on the matter. He clarified that solar flares typically only impact radio communications on the Earth’s dayside, where the sunlight is directly hitting. Given the U.S. was not facing the Sun at the time of the flare, Dr. French suggests the cellular outages were merely coincidental and not directly caused by solar flare activity.
