Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in a conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden, advocated for the continuation of open borders for legal immigration between the U.S. and Mexico. The discussion took place over the phone on Sunday afternoon, as disclosed by Lopez Obrador during his regular press conference on Monday.

Lopez Obrador stressed the necessity of facilitating entry for individuals engaged in legal immigration processes into the United States, while simultaneously taking measures to prevent irregular migration. “We spoke on… keeping the border open so that those who are in legal processes can enter the United States,” the Mexican leader stated. “But not allowing irregular migration.”

Additionally, Lopez Obrador highlighted the decrease in migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, noting a reduction to approximately 6,000 daily entries in January. He attributed this decline partly to social programs in other Latin American countries, which have been supported by Mexico and aimed at addressing the root causes of migration.
