Mitch Marner shines with a remarkable second career hat trick and shootout heroics, securing the Toronto Maple Leafs’ thrilling 4-3 triumph over the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night. Despite sporting a full shield and cage due to a recent jaw injury, Marner broke an eight-game goal drought with this stellar performance, reminiscent of his three-goal feat against Detroit on Feb. 26, 2022.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with his own game, Marner’s offensive burst was pivotal for Toronto, while Auston Matthews also contributed with a shootout goal and two assists. Joseph Woll’s 37 saves played a crucial role in the Leafs improving to 12-6-3, with the goaltender emphasizing the enjoyment of the expanded playing space.
Jared McCann displayed resilience for Seattle, scoring twice, and Eeli Tolvanen added a goal, but Philipp Grubauer’s 25 saves couldn’t secure the win. Despite Kraken coach Dave Hakstol’s belief that his team was superior, Marner’s prowess proved decisive.
Marner’s power-play goal in the first period set the tone, followed by a second-period one-timer. McCann’s power-play goal narrowed the gap, but Marner completed his hat trick in style. Although Seattle rallied in the third, tying the game, Woll’s outstanding saves in overtime paved the way for the shootout.
The Kraken will face Ottawa next, while the Maple Leafs are set to host Boston on Saturday night. The game showcased Marner’s resilience and skill, leaving fans eager for more standout performances.
