Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf, subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee, denied any political influence in the Hunter Biden investigation during her deposition. Despite these denials, her actions and restrictions on answering questions have intensified scrutiny.
Wolf, who resigned from the Justice Department, was interviewed by the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. Fox News Digital obtained a transcript of this interview. Jordan expressed frustration over Wolf’s refusal to answer most questions, citing directives from the Justice Department.
The probe into Hunter Biden, initiated in 2018, has been marred by allegations of political interference. IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler claimed Wolf attempted to limit inquiries regarding President Joe Biden. Wolf rebuffed these claims, insisting that her decisions as a prosecutor were always unbiased and in pursuit of justice.
Despite her assertions of impartiality, Wolf was constrained in her responses due to the ongoing investigation and legal obligations under the Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure and laws governing the disclosure of tax information. She maintained that her actions as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) were always in alignment with the Justice Manual, DOJ policy, and legal and ethical obligations.
Specifically, Wolf was accused of attempting to restrict questions about President Biden and advising against a physical search warrant on Hunter Biden’s residence, citing “optics.” She also allegedly warned Hunter Biden’s legal team about a planned search. In her testimony, Wolf did confirm that “Political Figure 1” referred to then-Vice President Joe Biden but refrained from further elaboration.
The testimony is part of a broader House impeachment inquiry against President Biden, led by key Republican figures including House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, R-Mo.; Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio; and Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky. This investigation focuses on the potential politicization of the Hunter Biden probe and the Biden family’s foreign business ventures, questioning whether the President was involved or benefited from these dealings. President Biden has consistently denied involvement in his son’s business affairs.
Hunter Biden, also subpoenaed, defied the summons for a deposition at the House Oversight Committee, instead making a public statement denying his father’s financial involvement in his business dealings. Comer and Jordan have threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress.
The unfolding situation comes as Special Counsel David Weiss charged Hunter Biden with tax evasion and filing false tax reports from January 2017 to October 2020. Weiss also indicted him on federal gun charges in Delaware, to which Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty, with his attorneys seeking dismissal of the charges.
This ongoing inquiry and the revelations from Wolf’s testimony highlight the complexities and controversies surrounding the Hunter Biden investigation, bringing into question the role of politics in prosecutorial decision-making and potentially impacting the broader political landscape.
