Las Vegas Logs Record High Temperature, But Southwest Heat Wave Could Subside

RENO, Nev. (NEWSnet/AP) — Las Vegas set a temperature record again Friday and Albuquerque tied its mark, but forecasters say a heat wave that baked the U.S. Southwest within the past week is subsiding.

An excessive heat warning expired Friday evening across most of the Southwest, although it continues through Saturday in Las Vegas.

Slightly cooler weather is expected throughout the weekend, according to National Weather Service.

The high of 110 degrees Friday in Las Vegas topped the city’s previous mark of 109, set in 2013.  Albuquerque tied its record of 100, set in 1981.

In Phoenix, the high Friday was 113, two degrees shy of the record. The normal high for this time of year is 102.

There have been no reports of heat-related deaths in the Southwest, but a 68-year-old man was hospitalized Friday in Phoenix after he was overcome with heat exhaustion while hiking on a mountain trail.

NWS said unseasonably hot weather could return next week, as high pressure builds over the region.
