Interior Secretary Deb Haaland’s Daughter Linked to Liberal Dark Money Network

Somah Haaland, the daughter of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, is associated with a group connected to a liberal dark money network.

Somah Haaland, daughter of U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, is a communications coordinator for the Pueblo Action Alliance (PAA), a New Mexico-based activist group. This organization, which promotes indigenous solutions to dismantle various forms of oppression, has attracted attention from Republican officials for its involvement in land use policy. The PAA is a fiscal project of the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), a group that has received funding exceeding $1.5 million since 2020 from funds managed by Arabella Advisors, a company known for its vast dark money network aligned with left-of-center organizations and causes Arabella Advisors.


In 2022, the Windward Fund, part of the Arabella network, gave SWOP $150,000, following donations of more than $136,000 in 2021 and $70,000 in 2020, as indicated by the Windward Fund’s tax filings 2022, 2021, and 2020. Moreover, the New Venture Fund, another segment of the Arabella network, granted SWOP $282,000 and $425,000 in 2021 and 2022, respectively, after a 2020 donation of more than $467,000 2021, 2022, 2020.


Arabella Advisors-managed funds have also supported other organizations advocating for various left-wing political causes, such as oil divestment campaigns and reform in criminal sentencing, as detailed by Influence Watch. The five nonprofits forming Arabella Advisors’ network, including the Windward Fund and the New Venture Fund, do not disclose their funding sources. These nonprofits also make grants to each other, further obscuring the origins of the money, according to the Capital Research Center.


The company provides management services to these nonprofits in exchange for fees and is under investigation by Brian Schwalb, the attorney general for the District of Columbia, for alleged tax law violations investigation.


Somah Haaland, who identifies as non-binary, supports a range of left-wing views, evidenced by her public posts on X, formerly Twitter. For example, she once wore a shirt with the statement “all colonizers are bastards” to shop in affluent neighborhoods in July 2020, amid racially-charged protests Twitter post.


SWOP, as PAA’s fiscal sponsor, handles administrative services, including financial management, to support PAA in attaining standalone nonprofit status, as outlined by the National Council of Nonprofits.


President Joe Biden announced his intention to nominate Deb Haaland as the Interior Secretary in December 2020. Both SWOP and PAA oppose fossil fuel development, and Haaland’s policies as Interior Secretary have generally been hostile to oil and gas activities on public lands and federally-controlled offshore areas SWOP, PAA, Interior policies.


The Department of the Interior’s decision in June to halt future fuel leasing activities near New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon for the next two decades, celebrated by Haaland’s Laguna Pueblo tribe, has been contentious. A different tribal group opposed the decision, citing economic concerns Source NM. This led to claims of a conflict of interest and an ethics complaint against Deb Haaland by Protect the Public’s Trust ethics complaint.


Deb Haaland reportedly engaged with PAA before her tenure at the DOI and met with PAA leaders during her service. In September, Haaland’s DOI released a restrictive five-year offshore oil and gas leasing schedule, drawing criticism from industry groups like the National Oceans Industries Association and the American Petroleum Institute NOIA, API.


Scott Walter, President of the Capital Research Center, commented on Arabella Advisors’ influence, stating, “It’s no surprise Arabella’s dark money network pours hundreds of thousands of dollars into the fiscal sponsor of a radical group tied to a sitting cabinet secretary and her daughter, because Arabella seeks power for itself and radical policies for America” Daily Caller News Foundation.


The PAA’s website includes a section on the New Mexico Venceremos Brigade, highlighting trips to communist Cuba, as described in a 1976 Department of Justice report Venceremos Brigade, DOJ report.

Requests for comments from the DOI, PAA, SWOP, Windward Fund, New Venture Fund, and Arabella Advisors have not yet been answered.
