Hurricanes’ 4-Goal Third Period Forces Game 6 vs. Rangers

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the tiebreaking goal with 13:21 remaining in the third period, propelling the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers in Game 5 on Monday night. The win staved off elimination for the Hurricanes and forces a Game 6 in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday. Should the Hurricanes win again, Game 7 will be held on Saturday in New York.

Carolina earned its second postseason win over the Rangers in New York in seven tries by scoring two goals in the first 6:39 of the third period.

Jordan Staal tied the game with a slick move 3:33 into the third period, followed by Kuznetsov, who gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead by capitalizing on a rebound 13:21 before the final buzzer.

Kuznetsov’s goal came after he sped down the left wing and passed to Jesperi Kotkaniemi, who made a cross-ice pass to Brady Skjei. Skjei’s shot from above the right circle was stopped by Igor Shesterkin, but the rebound found its way to Kuznetsov, who outmaneuvered Artemi Panarin to score.

Jordan Martinook added an insurance goal just over three minutes later, cashing in on a New York turnover behind the net, with Jack Drury assisting. Martin Necas sealed the win with an empty-net goal with 3:29 left in the game.

Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen made 20 saves, securing his second consecutive victory after struggling in the first two games of the series.

Jacob Trouba scored a short-handed goal in the second period for the Rangers, who struggled offensively and failed to capitalize on three power plays. Shesterkin stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Trouba’s short-handed goal at 6:23 of the second period, New York’s fourth of the postseason and his first career short-handed postseason tally, gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Trouba blocked a shot by Sebastian Aho, sped down the left wing, and fired a shot from the left circle that sailed over Andersen’s right shoulder.

Staal stunned the Madison Square Garden crowd by maneuvering around defenseman Braden Schneider, cutting in front of the crease, and finishing with a backhander past Shesterkin to tie the game.

After Kuznetsov’s go-ahead goal, Martinook extended the lead to 3-1 by converting a pass from Drury, firing a shot from between the circles over Shesterkin.

The Hurricanes will look to build on this momentum as they return home for Game 6, hoping to force a decisive Game 7.
