House Republicans, led by Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., unveiled articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday. The articles accuse Mayorkas of a “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and a “breach of public trust.”
The first article alleges that Mayorkas has violated laws set by Congress regarding immigration and border security, leading to the illegal entry of millions of aliens into the United States. The Republicans claim that his actions not only violate the separation of powers outlined in the U.S. Constitution but also pose a threat to national security.
The second article accuses Mayorkas of making false statements to Congress, including claims about the security of the border and the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) control over it.
Rep. Mark Green, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, stated that the articles present a “clear, compelling, and irrefutable case” for Mayorkas’ impeachment. He accused Mayorkas of breaching public trust through false statements to Congress and the American public and obstructing congressional oversight.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has informed Republican lawmakers of his intention to hold a House-wide vote on Mayorkas’ impeachment “as soon as possible.” Johnson highlighted polling indicating illegal immigration as a growing concern for American voters and accused President Biden and Mayorkas of willfully undermining the nation’s immigration laws.
The Department of Homeland Security responded to the allegations, labeling them as “baseless” and “hypocritical.” The DHS criticized the Republicans’ efforts as a politically motivated and factually unsupported campaign. They argued that the GOP is using the situation for political gain rather than seeking bipartisan solutions.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-MS., the ranking member of the committee, has dismissed the Republicans’ charges against Mayorkas. Thompson stated that the articles lack substantial evidence of “high crimes or misdemeanors,” the constitutional standard for impeachment. He accused the Republicans of using the impeachment power to cater to their political base and detract from their legislative inaction.
The move to impeach Mayorkas by the GOP follows a period of increasing illegal immigration under President Biden’s administration.
