Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has publicly acknowledged a personal relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, dismissing allegations regarding their relationship as unfounded. The confirmation came on Friday in response to claims suggesting that Willis improperly benefited from awarding Wade a contract deemed lucrative, which subsequently led to vacations funded by the earnings from his role. These allegations were part of a motion filed on January 8 by a co-defendant of former President Donald Trump, arguing for Willis’s disqualification and the case’s dismissal.
Willis refuted the notion that her relationship with Wade poses a conflict of interest or has resulted in any financial advantage to her. In a detailed filing, she described the allegations as designed to attract media attention without providing substantial grounds for the legal relief sought by the accusers.
An affidavit from Wade, attached to Willis’s response, clarified that their relationship evolved in 2022, post his appointment, and was strictly platonic prior. He emphasized that personal travel expenses were evenly split between them and, at times, funded by Willis from her personal accounts, countering speculations of financial impropriety linked to their professional collaboration.
The motion further addressed and dismissed allegations of racial bias introduced by comments Willis made in a speech, as claimed in a separate filing by Trump’s legal team. Willis argued that her public statements, which did not directly reference the case or defendants, cannot be construed as a basis for disqualification, labeling the motion as lacking in serious legal argument or ethical violation.
Willis and Wade’s defense highlighted Wade’s professional credentials, underscoring his extensive trial experience and his role as outside counsel for the Sheriff of Cobb County, compensated at a rate of $550 per hour. This defense aims to nullify claims of undue benefit and reinforce the legitimacy of their professional conduct amidst ongoing legal proceedings.
