East Coast Expected to See Major Winter Storm This Weekend

NEW YORK (NEWSnet/AP) — A winter weather system is expected to send a mix of snow and freezing rain this weekend into an area from the southern Appalachians to the Northeast — although it's too early for a detailed forecast.

Details on what the National Weather Service is calling the "Jan. 6-7 East Coast Winter Storm" should firm up soon. It would be the first significant winter storm of the region for the year.

The currently Pacific system will move through Colorado and New Mexico Thursday and into Texas and the Southeast before moving up the East Coast, said Tony Fracasso, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Some of the major U.S. metro areas that are used to white winters — such as Boston, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia — didn't receive much snow last year in part because of a lack of cold air.

Earlier this week, the National Weather Service bureau in New York City said 2023 has been noted as the city's “least snowiness” year, with just 2.3 inches measured in Central Park.
