A grand jury in Arizona indicted Cochise County supervisors Peggy Judd, 61, and Tom Crosby, 64, on Wednesday. The charges, announced by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, allege felony interference and conspiracy in an attempt to delay the certification of the 2022 election results.

The indictment claims that Judd and Crosby conspired to postpone the certification of votes in Cochise County for the November 2022 general election. Their actions included requests for hand counts of ballots and raising concerns over the certification of county voting machines. This was despite receiving legal advice indicating that such delays would be illegal, as reported by the Arizona Republic.

Attorney General Mayes said in a statement. “The repeated attempts to undermine our democracy are unacceptable,” she said. “I took an oath to uphold the rule of law, and my office will continue to enforce Arizona’s elections laws and support our election officials as they carry out the duties and responsibilities of their offices.”

The Arizona Republic outlined the potential consequences for the indicted officials, noting that a conviction could lead to a maximum of 2 1/2 years in prison and a $150,000 fine.

This incident echoes tactics used by supporters of former President Donald Trump following the 2020 presidential election. Trump’s supporters questioned the legitimacy of voting machines, a move that was part of broader claims of election fraud that purportedly led to Joe Biden’s presidency. Trump himself currently faces federal and Georgia state charges over his efforts to challenge those election results.
