President Biden will announce during his State of the Union address that the U.S. military is tasked with constructing a port along the Mediterranean coast of Gaza. This initiative, disclosed by a senior administration official, is designed to facilitate the delivery of critical supplies including food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters to the Hamas-controlled territory.
According to administration officials, the project involves the creation of a temporary pier, significantly increasing the capacity for delivering truckloads of assistance daily. “This new significant capability will take a number of weeks to plan and execute the forces that will be required to complete this mission are either already in the region or will begin to move there soon,” one official noted, emphasizing the collaborative effort with European, Middle Eastern, and global partners to support the initiative.
Security arrangements for the operation will be closely coordinated with Israeli authorities, while distribution within Gaza and to Israeli settlements will be facilitated through Cyprus, involving the U.S. military alongside a coalition of international partners and allies. The officials clarified that the operation’s execution relies on U.S. military personnel and vessels, without necessitating military boots on the ground in Gaza for the installation of the pier or causeway facility.
This announcement comes in response to the escalating humanitarian needs following the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas militants on southern Israel, with the U.S. having provided over $180 million in assistance since the incident. The construction of the port is seen as a critical step in addressing the inadequacy and slow pace of aid reaching Gaza, as highlighted by a Biden administration official. “Responding to the major increases in the needs of the Palestinian people has been a priority since day one, and it remains one today,” the official stated, underscoring the commitment to enhancing aid channels into Gaza.
The initiative marks a proactive effort by the United States to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, seeking to establish a more reliable and efficient system for aid distribution that circumvents potential bottlenecks at existing crossing points.
