by Murat Karul

Auston Matthews, in a remarkable display of skill, secured his second consecutive hat trick to commence the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs triumphed over the Minnesota Wild with a 7-4 victory on Saturday night.

In this high-scoring affair, William Nylander contributed significantly with two goals and an assist, while Ilya Samsonov stood strong with 28 saves. Calle Jarnkrok and Tyler Bertuzzi also found the back of the net, and the duo of Mitch Marner and Morgan Rielly provided two assists each.

Matthews’ feat of achieving back-to-back hat tricks to start the season places him in esteemed company, alongside NHL legends like Alex Ovechkin, Cy Denneny, Joe Malone, and Reg Noble, who achieved the same in the past. Matthews remains focused on performing at the highest level each night and helping his team succeed.

Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe expressed his joy in witnessing Matthews’ extraordinary performances and highlighted the excitement surrounding the star player’s impact on the team.

The game saw both teams trading goals, with Toronto falling behind initially but subsequently rallying, thanks to Matthews’ scoring prowess. Nylander’s sensational solo effort and the Leafs’ power-play goals further solidified their position.

Despite some pushback from the Wild, Toronto managed to maintain its lead and secure the victory, with Matthews and Nylander adding to their goal tally. Toronto winger Ryan Reaves also made a mark with his physical play and willingness to engage in fights.

The matchup was also notable for featuring Leafs rookie Matthew Knies facing off against former University of Minnesota teammate Brock Faber, who plays for the Wild.

The Maple Leafs are set to host the Chicago Blackhawks in their next game, while the Wild will travel to face the Montreal Canadiens.
