Argentina’s President-elect Javier Milei commenced his visit to the United States with a poignant stop at the gravesite of the seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson. On Monday morning, Milei arrived at the cemetery in Queens, New York, accompanied by his entourage, and met with Rabbi Simon Jacobson, who has become an informal advisor and mentor to him. The meeting, marked by emotional resonance, saw Milei and Rabbi Jacobson together offering prayers at the Rebbe’s grave.
Milei, known for his libertarian populist stance, has shown a deep admiration for Judaism. According to a Breitbart News report, he has studied the Torah and even considered converting from Catholicism to Judaism. Rabbi Jacobson revealed to Breitbart News that Milei reached out to him after Shabbat to inform him of his planned visit to the Ohel.
Jacobson, speaking about Milei’s fascination with the Rebbe, described him as a very spiritual person with a natural instinct towards truth and resonance with the Rebbe’s teachings. “Its universal, and global, and I think he just feels that he’s on a mission. I think he understands the bigger picture that a leader needs a vision, a leader isn’t just an administrator, he’s also a moral example, he has to inspire people,” Jacobson added.
Milei’s visit comes amid his promises to significantly alter Argentina’s foreign policy, which has been leaning towards China, Russia, and Iran under its current leftist government. Jacobson suggested that Milei’s election, particularly in the context of the turmoil in the Middle East and Iran’s involvement, might be seen as a form of divine intervention.
In their earlier conversation, Jacobson expressed to Milei the historic significance of his visit to the Ohel, especially with the ongoing situation in Israel and the broader Middle East. He emphasized the potential influence Milei could have on global leaders through moral and visionary leadership. Jacobson also shared his sense of serendipity about Milei’s unexpected election victory and his role in these evolving global dynamics, feeling honored to be part of this journey.
