Elevate Your Style With This Classic Kumiko Bag

With its infinitely interlocking circular shapes, the Japanese shippo pattern symbolizes hope, fulfillment, and harmony. This classic design emerges in the new line of Hanakumiko bags by Japanese company Tanemura Woodworks, which features the shippo motif in kumiko work.

The traditional Japanese craft of kumiko involves a process of wood “weaving,” in which small wooden pieces are assembled into geometric patterns without using glue or nails. The name “shippo’’ comes from a Buddhist term that literally translates as “seven treasures.” These treasures are gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, agate, and seashell. The shippo pattern is auspicious in nature, referring to the harmonious bonds woven between people, which are no less precious than material riches.

Elaborate kumiko art

In the Hanakumiko bags, traditional patterns and artisanal methods are reimagined in a unique combination of kumiko and leather, designed with a simple, feminine silhouette. Made with soft Tochigi leather, the bag retains its shape while accentuating the elaborate work.
