Beauty and strength have always been at the heart of the CHANEL philosophy, and this combination is being revisited in the new CHANEL skincare collection.
The innovative and holistic line, N°1 de CHANEL, had its beginnings in Southwest France at a botanical conservatory garden in the small village of Gaujacq. Over 2,000 varieties of camellias have been carefully cultivated there since 1998—a project of exceptional scale led by CHANEL’s team of botanists. One of these varieties is the deep maroon-red Camellia japonica, known as “The Czar,” in reference to its imperial splendour.
Researchers have observed the flower’s remarkable resilience and potential for use in skincare. The seemingly fragile, odourless camellia isn’t harmed by changes in moisture levels or by temperature drops. Instead, the high concentration of protocatechuic acid within the petals and the flower’s self-protective mechanisms allow it to grow and produce new leaves and blossoms year-round. The wish to harness these exceptional natural properties inspired the new N°1 de CHANEL collection.
Drawing on the extract of the red camellia blossoms and camellia water, the products are made with up to 97% natural ingredients, 76% of which are camellia derivatives. Pichia yeast, extracted from the camellia microbiota, helps strengthen the skin barrier. Red camellia oil, obtained from the seeds, adds a hydrating effect by preserving the skin’s moisture. Meanwhile, the seed shells are used to create eco-friendly packaging.
