A Life-Changing Treatment for Young Emma
At just six years old, Emma Timofte defied all odds and took her first steps after years of struggle. Diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Incontinentia Pigmenti when she was only a few weeks old, Emma faced challenges with mobility that most of us can’t imagine. This condition affected her skin, hair, teeth, and nervous system, leaving her with limited movement. But Emma’s story is one of hope, love, and the power of family.

Emma’s Struggle and a Family's Hope
When Stefania and Narcis, Emma’s parents, first learned about the possibility of a life-changing treatment, they were determined to make it happen. They set out to raise £20,000 to fund Emma’s journey to Greece for a groundbreaking procedure that could help her walk. They shared their story with family, friends, and even strangers, and their efforts exceeded their target, thanks to a combination of public donations and family support.
In the summer of 2022, Emma traveled to the Isas Pediatric Hospital in Athens. After a week of care, she underwent a 45-minute operation on June 9 that would change her life forever. The procedure, called SPML (Selective Percutaneous Myofascial Lengthening), targeted the stiffness in Emma’s muscles and gave her the opportunity to take her first steps.
A Life-Changing Decision
Stefania, Emma’s mother, describes the emotional toll of watching her daughter struggle day after day. "I could not stand to see Emma in pain any longer. We had to do whatever it took to help her walk," she said. The minimally invasive SPML treatment involved injecting tiny doses into the nerves surrounding Emma’s muscles, relaxing the areas affected by spasticity. It was the answer to a mother’s prayers.
The recovery process wasn’t easy, but the results have been remarkable. Emma is now on the path to recovery, gaining strength with every step. While her muscles are still weak from years of stiffness, Emma is slowly building up her strength, and she can now be seen riding her tricycle—a symbol of her growing independence.
Steps Toward Independence
Despite the challenges of living with Incontinentia Pigmenti, Emma has remained a joyful, energetic child. She loves singing, playing with her friends, and attending school. Her family describes her as a happy girl who is always eager to embrace life.
The first week after surgery was difficult, as Emma had to wear a knee immobilizer and couldn’t attend school. But Stefania and Narcis remained hopeful. Stefania shared, "The recovery wasn’t easy at first, but once Emma started feeling better, we knew it was all worth it."

Gratitude and a Bright Future
Stefania expressed her deep gratitude to everyone who supported Emma’s treatment—both financially and emotionally. “We were overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers who reached out to help. The treatment in Greece truly changed everything for us,” she said. With the support of so many people, Emma has taken her first steps toward the independence she deserves.
As Emma continues her recovery, her family is filled with hope and excitement for the future. They are thrilled to see their daughter flourishing and are deeply thankful for the support that made it all possible. “Emma’s journey is far from over, but with each step, she’s proving that nothing can hold her back. The future is bright, and we can’t wait to see what she’ll achieve next.”
