MID-HUDSON – Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer said Tuesday that the Trump administration should be addressing the trade imbalance with China, not playing Russian Roulette with American trade with Canada, one of our closest allies.
The Democratic Senate leader said Trump tariffs will lead to massive economic impacts on consumers and business in New York and around the country.
“Trump’s tariffs are a tax increase on upstate New York families plain and simple, a new national sales tax on all Americans. It’s a gut punch to upstate New York’s economy that could devastate our families and small businesses in ways we haven’t seen since the height of the pandemic,” Schumer said.
The senator is not the only one against the tariffs. Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation President Mike Oates has his own concerns about those increases.
“We like to see stability and strong relationships with our trading partners. Any disruption in that will have an impact. We will have to see what that pays out to be,” he said.
Oates said tariffs are not a good strategy.
