A toddler in the United Kingdom was suspended from a nursery school for “abuse against sexual orientation and gender identity,” according to data released by the Department for Education (DfE) and reported by The Telegraph. The suspension, which occurred during the 2022–2023 academic year, involved a child between the ages of three and four enrolled at a state school.

No additional information has been released regarding the name of the school, the circumstances of the alleged abuse, or the precise nature of the behavior that led to the suspension. The case appears to be part of a wider trend, with 94 students across state primary schools being suspended or permanently excluded for homophobic or transphobic behavior in the same academic year, according to GB News.

A widely circulated post on social media called attention to the case, stating, “Meanwhile in Britain — A Toddler (2–4 years old) was suspended from a nursery after being accused of being transphobic,” with the clip adding, “All staff & pupils should feel safe.” The post was shared by a user identified as Concerned Citizen, and can be viewed here.

Toby Young, director of the Free Speech Union, commented on the situation, telling Free Speech Union, “It beggar’s belief that schools are suspending children as young as five for breaching their ‘transphobia’ policy.”

Young continued, “I would have thought that if your ideology is so rigid it justifies you punishing toddlers for not complying with it, that’s a powerful argument for discarding it in favour of something less dogmatic.”

Government officials have not disclosed whether the child’s suspension was appealed or whether any support services were offered to the family. The DfE has not commented on whether age-appropriate review processes were followed in this and other related cases.

According to policy guidelines, schools are required to take action against any form of abuse based on protected characteristics. However, critics argue that applying these policies to children in nursery school may risk overreach in cases where young children may not fully comprehend gender and identity concepts.

The suspension has reignited debate over how early in a child’s education issues of gender identity and inclusivity should be addressed, and what disciplinary measures—if any—are appropriate for toddlers in educational settings.
