Newburgh schools celebrate ‘topping off’ ceremony on Career and Tech Ed Center
In keeping with tradition, steel workers sign the last beam before it is raised

NEWBURGH – Construction on the more than 132,000 square foot Newburgh school district Career and Technical Education Center reached a milestone on Thursday as the topping off ceremony was held. The last steel beam was hoisted into place.

Todd Diorio, president of the Hudson Valley Building Trades Council was thrilled to see the work progress on a facility that will train future tradesmen and women.

“There has been a partnership with the school district, and I want to continue that and see young kids come in and get a education on projects like this and then come into our apprenticeship program and then work,” he told an audience during the ceremony. “We are seeing more and more kids come into the trades.”

Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lisa Buon said the career center will be a model for the education of future tradespeople.

“As we stand here, we can see the future of this building beginning to take shape. It will soon be a place where dreams are nurtured, ideas are exchanged and success is built,” she said.

The facility is being constructed adjacent to Newburgh Free Academy Main. Completion is estimated in the summer of 2026.
