A midwife in Texas, Maria Margarita Rojas, has been arrested for allegedly conducting illegal abortions and running a network of unlawful clinics in the Houston area. Rojas, 48, has been charged with providing an abortion and practicing medicine without a license, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office.
Authorities claim that Rojas operated multiple clinics in northwest Houston where she illegally performed abortions in violation of the state’s strict abortion laws. Texas law, under the 2021 Human Life Protection Act, prohibits most abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically around six weeks of pregnancy.
Rojas faces second-degree felony charges, which carry up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $10,000 if convicted. In addition to criminal charges, Texas law allows for fines of at least $100,000 “per violation” for unlawful abortion procedures.
Paxton’s office issued a statement emphasizing the state’s commitment to protecting life and ensuring those who break the law are held accountable. “I will always do everything in my power to protect the unborn,” Paxton said.
The arrest marks one of the first criminal prosecutions under Texas’ abortion ban. Rojas is said to have worked part-time at a birth center where she provided prenatal care to low-income, primarily Spanish-speaking communities. Holly Shearman, a colleague, expressed shock at the arrest, calling Rojas a devout Catholic who helped vulnerable populations.
Authorities have filed a temporary restraining order to shut down the clinics, and it remains unclear whether Rojas has secured legal representation.
