ALBANY – Revitalization of the former Middletown Psychiatric Center will take a step forward if the final state budget approves $10 million for revitalization of the Kleiner Center building.
The Senate has approved the funding in its one-house bill. It must also make it into the Assembly package and then be approved by the governor as part of the final state spending plan.
Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) secured the funding in the upper house bill.
“The renovation and revitalization that’s already been completed on the former psychiatric campus has had an enormous positive impact on the community,” said Skoufis. “I’m looking forward to the benefits associated with this latest project, a major investment in Middletown and Orange County.”
Mayor Joseph DeStefano called the transformation of the psych center “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our city.”
In 2024, the final ownership transfer of 33 acres and 13 buildings on the former state property to the city was completed. It had been stalled in state bureaucracy for more than 10 years.
