United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has awarded a $70 million contract to Granite Construction Co. to extend the wall along the southern border, marking the first such contract of President Donald Trump’s second term. The California-based company will construct approximately seven additional miles of the border wall in Hidalgo County, Texas, a region frequently used for illegal crossings and smuggling operations.
CBP announced the contract on Saturday, stating that the new segment will “close critical openings” left incomplete during President Trump’s first term. The agency added, “Completing the border wall in these locations will support the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) ability to impede and deny illegal border crossings and the drug- and human-smuggling activities of cartels.” The extend the wall along the southern border initiative has intensified under Trump’s leadership, particularly after President Joe Biden froze funding for border wall projects upon entering office.
Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that construction officially began on Sunday. “Everybody, I’m here in Arizona, and right at this spot you can see where the border wall ends,” Noem said in a video posted on social media. “As of today, we’re starting seven new miles of construction. We’re going to continue to make America safe again.”
The border wall remains a focal point of Trump’s immigration policy. As part of his renewed commitment, the president signed executive orders titled “Securing our Borders” and “Declaring a National Emergency at the Southern Border of the United States,” which direct DHS to “take all appropriate action” to secure “full operational control of the southern border.”
Earlier this month, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard visited the southern border to inspect the progress and reinforce the administration’s dedication to curbing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. During the visit, Vance commented, “I think the president’s hope is that by the end of the term we build the entire border wall.”
Illegal border crossings have declined since Trump resumed office, a trend his administration attributes to renewed enforcement and strategic infrastructure expansion. The Trump administration plans further contracts in coming months to expedite construction across additional high-traffic sectors.
