Putin Backs U.S. Ceasefire Proposal, But Emphasizes Key Conditions

Russian leader signals agreement with Trump’s ceasefire push while stressing need for long-term peace solutions.

President Vladimir Putin announced Thursday that Russia agrees with the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, but emphasized that any agreement must address the root causes of the conflict and establish lasting peace.

“We agree with the proposals to cease hostilities,” Putin said during a press conference in Moscow after talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. “But we proceed from the fact that this cessation should be such that it would lead to long-term peace and would eliminate the original causes of this crisis.”

The Russian leader’s remarks come as President Donald Trump continues diplomatic efforts to secure a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine has already signaled it would support.

Russia Open to Further Talks with U.S.

Putin indicated that Russia is willing to discuss further details with Washington, hinting that he may directly speak with Trump to clarify expectations.

“The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it,” he said. “But there are issues that we need to discuss. And I think we need to talk to our American colleagues as well.”

Putin also expressed gratitude toward Trump for his diplomatic efforts, saying, “We support the idea of ending this conflict by peaceful means.”

Russia’s Strategic Position in Ukraine

Since mid-2024, Russian forces have made significant territorial advances, now controlling nearly one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory. The Kremlin has framed these territorial gains as necessary leverage in any potential peace negotiations.

Putin’s support for a temporary ceasefire comes as Russian troops continue operations in Kursk Oblast, where they are poised to push Ukrainian forces out of the region entirely. On Wednesday, Putin visited a military command post in the area, wearing green camouflage uniform as he met with frontline commanders.

Trump’s Ceasefire Proposal and Next Steps

Trump publicly urged Russia on Wednesday to accept the U.S. ceasefire proposal, stating that “the bloodbath must end.” His administration has been working with Ukrainian officials and allies to secure a path to negotiations.

Putin’s remarks suggest that while Moscow is willing to accept a ceasefire in principle, Russia will seek additional concessions in any final agreement. Russian officials have hinted that they want guarantees regarding Ukraine’s neutral status and formal recognition of Russian control over certain territories.

The next steps will likely involve direct U.S.-Russia discussions, as Putin signaled his intention to coordinate further with Trump’s administration. Meanwhile, White House officials have not confirmed if a direct call between the two leaders is scheduled.

The situation remains fluid, with the Biden-backed factions in Kyiv pushing for stronger security assurances, while Russia continues to assert that any ceasefire must include a broader settlement addressing its strategic concerns.
