Long time Hermosa Kiwanian and 2001 Hermosa Beach Man of the Year Earl Feys passed away January 16, at age 87.
Feys was born in Detroit, Michigan and served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War He was a parole officer for over. 30 years.
“His life revolved around service to our community, his family and friends; preferably without recognition,” fellow Kiwanian Rick Koenig said.
“The main reason for my attachment to Kiwanis is I came as an outsider and was both welcomed and accepted by all of the members,” Feys told friends.
He joined the Hermosa Kiwanis Club in 1980 after addressing the club on behalf of Project Touch, a program started by his first wife, Julie Dorr, to help at risk high school graduates. After Dorr passed away in 1996, Feys assumed leadership of Project Touch.
In 2021, Leadership Hermosa recognized Feys with its Nonprofit Leadership Award.
Feys served as the Hermosa Kiwanis president in 1993-94, and subsequently was its representative to Kiwanis International.
In 2003, Feys married Aizhen “Alice” Yang, who was at his bedside when he passed.
The Feys attended St. Cross Episcopal Church in Hermosa Beach. Feys is survived by his wife Aizhen Feys (nee Yang), his step-daughter Belinda White (Garrett), grandchildren Ryden and Zinnia, his sisters Kathy Burns and Mary King, and his niece Bonnie Myers.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club, Memorial Scholarship Fund.
A memorial will be held Saturday, February 8 at 11 a.m. at Rice Center, 5310 Torrance Boulevard.
