The National Border Patrol Council has endorsed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election, signaling growing dissatisfaction among agents with the Biden-Harris administration. According to the Washington Examiner, the agency has lost over 4,000 personnel since 2020, leaving it with only about 19,000 employees, a significant drop that has sparked concerns of a staffing crisis if Kamala Harris is elected president.
In an effort to close the gap, the administration has increased recruitment incentives, offering bonuses ranging from $10,000 to $30,000, and encouraged retired agents to return. However, these efforts have not been enough to resolve the agency’s high turnover and low morale, which insiders attribute to a lack of clear direction and support from the current administration.
A growing number of Border Patrol agents have anonymously voiced their discontent, stating that they are ready to leave the force if Harris wins. “We will have another exodus just because we will have a bunch of 20-year agents saying peace out,” one agent told the New York Post. The agent explained that many of the more experienced personnel, those with five to ten years on the job, are seeking other employment opportunities due to frustrations with how the agency is being managed.
The agency has faced a significant dip in morale, with agents claiming that their roles have been made “as inefficient as possible” under the Biden-Harris administration. “They can’t outwardly tell us not to do our job, but when you’re watching criminals come in and get released, it sucks,” one agent said.
The situation has become so dire that the Border Patrol has had to hire its first suicidologist to combat the rising suicide rate among personnel. In 2022 alone, the agency recorded a record 15 suicides.
Former Yuma Border Patrol Chief Chris Clem also weighed in on the issue, stating that morale “has never been as low” within the agency. He added, “Kamala Harris has been bad for morale, for not only law enforcement around the country, but also for our border security personnel.”
Under the Biden-Harris administration, migrant encounters have skyrocketed, with over 10 million reported encounters, according to federal data. While recent months have seen a decline in illegal crossings, with numbers dropping from 250,000 in December 2023 to around 54,000 in September 2024, the damage to the Border Patrol’s workforce may already be done.
Both Harris and Trump have pledged to bolster the Border Patrol, with Trump committing to adding 10,000 new agents to the force. Still, many within the agency remain skeptical of Harris’s ability to turn the situation around, with some expressing a firm determination to leave if she assumes office.
