Stewart Cink shot a 4-under-par 67 on Saturday to join Y.E. Yang at the top of the leaderboard at the Ascension Charity Classic in St. Louis. Both players are tied at 8 under par heading into the final round.
Cink, who is aiming for his second Champions Tour victory of the season and career, made an eagle on the par-4 11th hole and added four birdies. Despite bogeys on holes 5 and 7, Cink rallied with a strong back nine, including two consecutive birdies on the first two holes. “It was a little scrappy, especially early on,” Cink admitted. “But I felt like if I could shoot 4-under on the back nine, I would get myself back in position.”
Yang, who led after the first round, struggled slightly on Saturday. He recorded only three birdies and a bogey, finishing with a 2-under 69. The South Korean golfer, still seeking his first PGA Tour Champions win, will need a strong performance on Sunday to secure the title.
Three golfers are within striking distance, tied at 6-under 136: Bernhard Langer of Germany, Rod Pampling of Australia, and Kevin Sutherland. Langer shot a 4-under 67 without a bogey, including birdies on holes 8, 9, 10, and 16. Pampling had a mixed round with birdies and bogeys, finishing with a 3-under 68. Sutherland, despite a challenging round with three birdies and two bogeys, managed a 1-under 70.
American golfers Jerry Kelly, Marco Dawson, and Justin Leonard are tied for sixth, one stroke behind the trio at 5-under 137, alongside Argentina’s Angel Cabrera (71).
