Cold Spring pedestrian tunnel to be upgraded

COLD SPRING – Cold Spring officials are awaiting cost estimates to install floodgates for the Metro-North pedestrian tunnel connecting lower Main Street to the Hudson River.

Thousands of pedestrians use the tunnel each week, especially on the weekends when tourists inundate the village.

Last summer the tunnel became flooded when torrential downpours pelted the region, forcing its closure.

Mayor Kathleen Foley said repairs to the tunnel have been funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the wake of the July 2023 storms.

Foley also reported that the tunnel contains hardware at its egress indicating it had previously been equipped with some type of storm doors.

The village also plans to install security cameras in the tunnel and at the riverfront bandstand to deter vandals.

Foley said the cameras would be purchased with a $55,000 grant from the federal Department of Justice. Uncle Sam previously reimbursed the village for the costs incurred to install cameras at the entrance to Cold Spring Village Hall and in the village courtroom.

The cameras are expected to cost $15,000 with the village paying a maximum of $17,948 for labor and installation.
